The new novel The South by Tash Aw, an author who has been nominated for the Booker Prize on several occasions, tells the story of a family in Malaysia in the late 1990s. Through flashbacks, the plot follows the teenager Jay and his family, who are expected to run his late grandfather’s farm. Yet the natural world around them proves almost insurmountable. The tangle of ferns is too dense, the heat too oppressive. The sultry, charged air – which you can almost touch – becomes an ambiguous metaphor. It reflects the tense situation of the Asian financial crisis at that time and, at the same time, forms the atmospheric backdrop to the coming-of-age of sixteen-year-old Jay, who, in nights full of longing and desire, begins a relationship with Chuan, the farm manager’s son.
