Deborah Levy: Mein Jahr in Paris mit Gertrude Stein
DE

The narrator in Deborah Levy’s new novel spends her time in Paris on a quest: to find her friend’s lost cat, but above all to find Gertrude Stein. She is supposed to write an essay about the writer, but keeps getting stuck on it. She finds it difficult to do justice to this iconic figure and her significance for modernism. So she goes to Père Lachaise Cemetery to find the grave, immerses herself in Stein’s writings, gathers biographical facts and discusses the subject with her Parisian friends. Ultimately, however, her true engagement with Stein takes place through and within language itself. The novel achieves a unique interweaving of content and form, a recomposition, a bringing to life of Gertrude Stein’s style and thought in practice, in which Levy reflects on the present with the same intelligence and non-conformity as Stein did on her own time.

Tash Aw: Der Süden
DE

The new novel The South by Tash Aw, an author who has been nominated for the Booker Prize on several occasions, tells the story of a family in Malaysia in the late 1990s. Through flashbacks, the plot follows the teenager Jay and his family, who are expected to run his late grandfather’s farm. Yet the natural world around them proves almost insurmountable. The tangle of ferns is too dense, the heat too oppressive. The sultry, charged air – which you can almost touch – becomes an ambiguous metaphor. It reflects the tense situation of the Asian financial crisis at that time and, at the same time, forms the atmospheric backdrop to the coming-of-age of sixteen-year-old Jay, who, in nights full of longing and desire, begins a relationship with Chuan, the farm manager’s son.
